Table Salt

Table salt is the salt we all know: sodium chloride (NaCl), the 'simple' chemical formula we take in every day. 39.5 percent sodium and 60.5 percent chloride, the sodium component of which is important for health. Sodium helps regulate the fluid balance in our body and our blood pressure. It also stimulates the functioning of muscle and nerve cells, according to the Nutrition Centre. However, the application of cooking salt is much broader.

Applications kitchen salt
Starting a list is an impossible task if you have the ambition to draw up a complete list of applications. Kitchen salt is used for food preservation, for water softening, for the antibacterial effect in ponds, it is used in cosmetic products and can also serve well as road salt. The latter, however, is only used by private individuals; stricter requirements are set for professional smoothing. And so there are thousands more possibilities. Kitchen salt is and remains above all a seasoning.

Composition kitchen salt
Table salt (or food salt) is usually 99.9 percent pure sodium chloride, i.e. pure salt. The remaining 0.1 percent consists of moisture and/or an anti-caking agent. Table salt is either vacuum salt or sea salt, which in turn represents the way in which it is extracted. Vacuum salt is extracted from the deep layers of the ground by first dissolving it in water. It is then vacuum pumped up and evaporated. Sea salt is also evaporated, but from seawater of course.

Kitchen salt grain grades
Table salt - or more precisely: food salt - is available in various particle sizes, also with additives such as nitrite. Any salt intended for human consumption carries all relevant certifications (BRC and IFS), i.e. in accordance with the international guidelines in the Codex Alimentarius.
